MEDIA TRAINING
SPECIALISTS
Kelly Communications operates
as a communications consultancy which specialises in
helping business and community leaders communicate either
through the media or via video to internal and external
audiences. Our media training skills allow us to obtain best
performances from people facing our cameras when we produce
videos for our clients.
But before we go into more details about our
specialist media training services, why not sign up for
our FREE media training tips. A set of 95 expert tips PLUS
five articles on key media training points. Just enter
your information below (and please don't worry
about SPAM - we hate it as much as the next
company):
Our media training is
very strong on using powerful, simple language to convey your
messages to the public. Why? Well, there's a basic difference
between the media and the corporate world that needs to be
understood here. The media, generally, are down to earth
and their expectations are that you will be too if you want to
communicate with the public. Unfortunately, most corporate
people don't seem to think that way and we usually
have a tussle in convincing them that bigger, longer
and more complex is definitely not better if you're
dealing with the public via the media.
If you look at a typical
consultant's report it might be 300 pages long and very
complex. However, it usually has an Executive Summary at the
front. There's your difference. The media, and the public they
serve, want a small slice of that Executive Summary
- not the full report.
There's also a huge difference
between management training and media training. We understand
the difference and we are very good at getting you to
understand it too. Our testimonials attest to that.
We don't train you to be like the politicians
but we do train you to take their best media handling
attributes and apply them to your performances.
Most people don't know how to turn the tables on
the media until they see/hear our version of a successful
media encounter! We even teach you
how to speak the spoken word rather than the written word
which appears to be a big failing with politicians and
business leaders.
All those points about simple language apply to
our video production as well. The powerful medium of
video gives viewers only one chance to understand the
message so simplicity is vital.
The Changing
Media Landscape
(And We Don't Mean
Ownership)
One thing you'll need to be
aware of is the changing nature of the media landscape. Our
multi-media theory presentation is always up to date with the
latest information on who is consuming which media and how. For
instance, the revolution in media has seen most change happen
to press outlets - you can now be facing a video camera as well
as a journalist with pen and/or audio recorder for a press
encounter. We now produce Video News Releases for print media
and that's a relatively new development (2006).
Despite those changes, one thing
remains constant in media encounters - and that's how to effectively
handle the journalist's interview. This is the very core
of our media training because if you can't handle an
interview situation, you shouldn't really be dealing with
the media at all!
In mid 2007 we published the 3rd
Edition of Managing the
Media as the world's first multi-media
ebook on handling the Western media. Details on that
book can be accessed via the book graphic in the left
hand column. In May 2008, this book was updated further to
version 3.1 and is now a fully downloadable PDF document
with all the multi-media files embedded into the file.

In our highly-regarded
training, we deliberately use journalists who no longer work in
mainstream journalism. We do that to provide you
with absolute confidentiality (and we wouldn't still be in
business 20 years later if that wasn't the case). Our trainers
know how to put you through the interview ropes and also know
how to help you handle anything from an easy fact-finding
interview to a more harrowing issue-based interview. We do it
with honesty and fairness and, if we have to let you down in
front of your peers, we do it with compassion.
So, What Do
People Think Of Our Training?

real, dated and with name and title of each
participant.
Range of
workshops
We run workshops to suit YOUR training needs.
Our most popular is a one-day basic media training workshop
geared for four to six participants in a nine to five
environment. However there are many other modules. Click
the appropriate link in the right hand column to select the
training module you require or contact us via that link to discuss
your specific training needs.
We are portable and ask only for a screen or
blank wall - preferably white - if we're going to train at your
premises. Ideally, we would book a training venue to get your
people out of their office environment and concentrating fully
on our media training but, realistically, that does cost
more.
Fees
Our fees are neither the dearest nor the
cheapest in Australia. We believe they realistically
reflect our position in the marketplace as one of Australia's
leading media training organisations. All travel and accomodation costs are extra
as are venue and catering costs. Please read
our terms from the Terms & Online Payment link in the left
hand column - we now accept your credit card payments via the
trusted PayPal service.
Where do we
train?
In the past 20 years of running
these workshops we've trained thousands of people to handle a
lot of media situations and we've trained them in a lot of
different locations. Our workshops have been endorsed in the
United Kingdom, the
United States, Canada, Thailand, Singapore, Laos, The
Philippines and New
Zealand.
Nationally, we've trained in
Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth,
Kalgoorlie, Roxby Downs, Wollongong, Nowra, Hobart, Launceston,
Jabiru, Cannington, Townsville, Traralgon, Ballarat,
Albury and, of course, Melbourne.
Why not sign up now for our FREE media
training report. This contains 95 different media training
tips as well as five separate articles on key media
training points. You never know what you might learn and,
incidentally, your email address is safe with us. We hate
SPAM as much as the next company.
Which type of
media is hardest to handle?
While our training covers all
four arms of the media - press, radio, television and internet
- we work on the firmly established basis that the order of
difficulty hasn't changed a lot even though the order of
power/reach might have. So, it remains: television, radio and
press, then internet. Consequently, our workshops are geared to
the electronic side of the media because it’s here that you
will have most impact. We also realise that the internet has
become a more powerful medium and we address that in our
training.
Why not contact us (see
contact us link in the left
hand column) now to discuss your media needs? It might be
a media training workshop, perhaps our external input might
help with your media issues management, it might be how to best
handle the media's visual needs (e.g. Video News Releases or
pre-planned photographs - all produced by professionals) so you
can provide them with visuals without them trampling all over
your site/office/operation.
You might be amazed at how our experience can
really help in those media matters!
